The specter of collectivization looms over Malšín. Young Čeněk Kotál returns to his native village after completing his university studies. His uncompromising father Bedřich and his father's unmarried and embittered sister Marie run the family farm. While old Kotál is having an affair with the innkeeper Božena, young Čeněk falls in love with the maid Gabriela.
